Ensuring Privacy While Enhancing Security with Cameras

Aug 23, 2024 | Business, Commercial

Security cameras are one of the best ways to monitor a business. Being able to monitor multiple angles of the interior and exterior of a business with cameras gives owners peace of mind or may even be critical evidence in the event of a break-in or vandalism.  With all the surveillance possibilities, how does a business balance their need for security with their customers’ privacy rights?

Transparency

One of the easiest and best ways to respect your customer’s privacy is to be fully transparent. They have a right to know that they are being filmed. Conspicuous signage throughout the business can make customers aware of what areas are being filmed.  Additionally, taking the extra step of explaining why certain areas are being monitored will go a long way to easing customer concerns about being filmed.  With clear communication, most customers will understand your reasoning and not be bothered by the cameras.

Thoughtful Placement

Create a placement plan that maximizes coverage of your business while minimizing unnecessary customer filming.  Determine the high-risk areas and avoid filming just anywhere. Always keep cameras pointed at your own property and never place them in areas where the expectation is privacy, such as bathrooms, changing stations, etc.

Privacy Features and Security

Take advantage of blurring and face mask technology that can reduce the identifiers of customers on film. Customize motion zones that only record predetermined areas and purposely avoid private areas.  Secure the recordings with encryption and strong passwords that are updated regularly and finally, limit which personnel can access the recordings to reduce unnecessary viewing.

Most people want to feel safe and in our technological world are coming to terms with the idea that they may be filmed at some point.  We understand the role of security cameras and for the most part accept their being used. Even with this acceptance, however, it is still the responsibility of the company to adopt and implement best practices for protecting the privacy of their patrons.  This can be achieved through transparent communication, strategic placement and securing the data. Your customers will be grateful that you considered their privacy.
