Spring is an ideal time for a complete reset. As you come out of the cold, dark winter months, it only makes sense to spend time deep cleaning, decluttering and swapping out those winter items for things more fitting for the warmer months. As you ready your home for the season, don’t forget to give your alarm system a spring checkup as well. Checking off some maintenance items will ensure that your system remains in proper working order to keep you protected year-round.
Alarm Testing
The best place to start is by running tests to make sure your alarm system is working properly. Follow all testing recommendations, replace necessary batteries in all detectors, including smoke and carbon monoxide testers. Should you find anything not working properly, quickly follow up with your provider with a list of any issues that need to be fixed. It’s also a good idea to check for new types of equipment and security upgrades that might enhance your current security.
Review and Update
Many people don’t realize that any software you use, will have updates from time to time. Make sure you are running the most current version of your security software and/or app. Failing to download updates can cause glitches to occur. As you check for software updates, review all passcodes, passwords, or access codes. Who have you given your security info to over the last few months to a year? Has someone who used to enter your house, such as maintenance or a guest been given a security code that needs to be changed?
Clean, Examine and Edit
Security equipment needs a good spring cleaning too. Make sure you give everything a good dusting, and wipe down lenses, check camera angles, etc. Remove any obstructions that might cause interference with detectors, sensors and cameras. Review potential entry points to make sure all vulnerable areas in your home have thorough security coverage. Finally, review your family security plan for all types of events. Teach kids how to use the security system, what to do in the case of an emergency and run drills to practice.
Spring is a great time to regroup and refresh your home. It’s fun to change out the dark colors of winter for the light pastels of Spring. As you swap out seasonal cushions, clean off patio furniture and pare down your belongings, don’t forget to take some time to thoroughly check your current security setup.
