The Importance of Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors: What Every Homeowner Needs to Know

Oct 18, 2024 | Residential, Residential News

The primary case for having smoke and carbon monoxide detectors is that they save lives.  While “having” smoke and carbon monoxide detectors sounds simple enough, since they are standing guard 24/7 to protect our families, we want to ensure they are correctly used, well maintained and capable of the level of protection we need.

Equipment and Connectivity

With fire prevention, there are primarily two types of detection features every home should have.  One detects flames in the case of a quick fire with less smoke, while the other detects the smoke from a smoldering, slow burning fire. Both smoke and flames are deadly and destructive so you will want to get a detector that has sensors for both. Carbon Monoxide (CO), on the other hand, is an invisible and odorless gas that can only be detected with a carbon monoxide detector. CO is particularly dangerous as it can strike victims with intense illness or even death before anyone is aware. Purchase equipment that can connect to each other so all alarms in the house will go off at the same time in an emergency. Consider remote monitoring to ensure emergency services can arrive quickly.

Placement

Every level of your home and preferably in every bedroom is the gold standard for detector placement.  Think about when you want to know about a potential fire. In the room it started, right? Having less detectors means the fire/smoke/CO must reach that room or hallway before anyone is alerted.  And at that point, not only has the fire spread, but will everyone hear the alarm from inside closed bedrooms at night?  Additionally, even when no one is home, early detection mitigates extensive damage.

Maintenance and Testing

Conduct monthly testing on all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your house. Ensure that there is no dust or cobwebs interfering with the sensors. Finally, make a calendar notification to remind you to change the batteries once a year. Along with detectors, always make sure your family has an emergency/evacuation plan

There is nothing more precious than our family’s safety. Whether away on a vacation, or tucked in to bed at night, comprehensive fire safety that includes well placed detectors for fire, smoke, and carbon monoxide can ensure peace of mind for you and those you love.
